Infertility Treatment Costs

Many couples have the mistaken impression that all infertility treatments are expensive and complicated.  This is because the media usually focuses on the most innovative and advanced reproductive technologies that are judged “news worthy”.

Most couples (approximately 80%) will achieve pregnancy without the need for in vitro fertilization, ICSI, or other advanced procedures.  The most important factor is that infertility specialists, like Dr. Kustin, have advanced training, are thorough, and are more likely to discover all of the contributing causes of a couple’s infertility.

The choice to see a fertility specialist is much like other specialties. For example; if your general practitioner told you that you have a brain tumor, you will seek care from a specialist (neurosurgeon).  Like other specialists, reproductive endocrinologists undergo extensive advanced training and are best equipped to treat infertility. Infertility specialists keep abreast of the latest treatment and testing recommendations, regularly attend conferences, and participate in continuing education courses.

The initial appointment with Dr. Kustin is no more expensive than other specialists.  Our financial counselor meets with each couple to evaluate their insurance and explain treatment options.  Dr. Kustin strives to make treatments affordable and our IVF charge is the lowest in the region.

OB/GYNs and generalists often prescribe Clomid for ovulation induction. This is sometimes done in the absence of a complete male workup.  If male infertility is present, treatment of the female cannot be successful unless the male factor is treated. Clomid pregnancies usually occur during the first three ovulatory cycles and treatment beyond this time is rarely indicated. We often see patients who have been on Clomid for much longer times, which is expensive, increases treatment stress, and is unlikely to result in pregnancy.

Each couple’s treatment is individualized; however, if Clomid is indicated it is usually employed for 3-6 cycles and rarely beyond. The next step is often stimulated (FSH) IUI which is also used for 3-6 cycles.  Obviously, treatments vary based upon the causes of a couple’s infertility. Proper use of drugs like Clomid helps to control treatment cost.

We look forward to working with you in your quest to have a child. Please contact us so that we can help you understand treatment costs, evaluate your insurance coverage, and assist in financial planning.
